If you were to make a list of the best filmmakers of all time, Orson Welles would be on it, if not in the number one spot.

George Orson Welles, as he was born, was an American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer.

These Orson Welles quotes include some from the movie, Citizen Kane, which was released in 1941, and consistently tops the list of best movies ever made.

He is also well known for radio work, including his narration of a radio adaptation of H. G. Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds.

Some listeners tuning in believed that they were listening to actual news coverage of an alien invasion!

Although there were some reports of panic, which proved to be mostly inaccurate and overstated, it helped make Welles a household name.

Welles released twelve other features, the most critically acclaimed include The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), Touch of Evil (1958), The Trial (1962), Chimes at Midnight (1965), and F for Fake (1973).

He had a distinctive directorial style that mixed layered and nonlinear narrative forms, with uses of lighting such as chiaroscuro, and unusual camera angles.

Welles borrowed sound techniques from radio, preferred deep focus shots, and long takes.

These techniques earned him praise as “the ultimate auteur.”

What did you learn from these Orson Welles quotes?

Welles was an outsider to the studio system and the world of Hollywood.

This led to struggles over creative control on his projects early on.

Later in his career, he also battled with a variety of independent financiers across Europe.

Many of his films, like Touch of Evil, have been painstakingly edited adhering to his notes.

Some even remained unreleased or spent decades in development.

The Other Side of the Wind was released in 2018.

Orson Welles was married three times.

His wives included Virginia Nicolson, Dolores del Río, and Rita Hayworth.

He had three children, one with Virginia Nicolson, and one with Rita Hayworth.

His third child was with Paola Mori.

Welles was rumored to have fathered British director Michael Lindsay-Hogg, with Irish actress Geraldine Fitzgerald.

DNA results proved inconclusive, although Gloria Vanderbilt, a friend of Fitzgerald’s wrote that Fitzgerald had told her that Welles was Michael’s father.

However, biographer Patrick McGilligan, claims the timeline makes Welles being the father an impossibility.
