Jacques Cousteau was a jack-of-all-trades kind of man.
He was an explorer, a French naval officer, conservationist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author, and researcher.
His naval career was cut short when he was in a car accident that broke both of his arms.
Leaving the navy led him to devote more time to studying the ocean.
The Silent World: A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure, was his first book.
He also directed the documentary version of the book which one a Palme d’Or at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.
They credit Cousteau with improving the Aqua-Lung design during the 1940s, which led to the open-circuit scuba technology that we still use today.
He also predicted the existence of the ability of porpoises to use echolocation.

Cousteau died in 1997 of a heart attack, but his legacy lives on.
He wrote more than 50 books and founded an environment protection foundation.
His talents as a showman brought awareness to a variety of causes and led to some incredible advances.
His name even made it into the science fiction book, The Deep Range which mentions a large research expedition submarine called Cousteau.
