Mental health services are important
President John F. Kennedy was one of the first to openly endorse the movement to normalize counseling in nationwide communities by signing the Mental Health Act in 1963.
This law transformed how mental health services were implemented nationwide.
Even with an infrastructure to serve the public, getting people to use these services is another story.
Most people who have a mental illness will not receive treatment.
The fact is, people will forego mental health treatment for many reasons.
Anything from doubt, pride, fear, judgment, or lack of awareness can cause a person not to seek treatment.
It is human to fear the unknown, so this is understandable.
Other people doubt how efficient any form of mental health therapy can be.
While these perspectives are valid and have merit, sometimes opening up to someone and opening up to counseling can be the experience we need to be ourselves fully.
